This calculator checks continuous residence requirements only. These other requirements for settlement as a partner are not checked here:
- Your relationship must be genuine and subsisting, and your partner British, settled, or settling at the same time (SETF 7.1–7.3)
- You must have held permission based on this relationship for at least a year (SETF 7.3)
- The financial requirement, if you are on the 5-year Appendix FM route
- English language — B1 speaking and listening now, rising to B2 for applications made on or after 26 March 2027 (SETF 5.1)
- Knowledge of Life in the UK (Appendix KOL UK) (SETF 6.1)
- Suitability — you must not fall for refusal under Part Suitability, and must not be in breach of immigration laws or on immigration bail (SETF 2.1)
Qualifying period: 5 years on the Appendix FM partner route, or 10 years under Appendix Settlement Family Life (SETF 3.1). Absence limit: CR 3.1 — no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period. Time abroad for work, study or supporting family is permitted if family life was maintained in the UK throughout.
