Spouse Visa Settlement Scope Notice

This calculator checks continuous residence requirements only. These other requirements for settlement as a partner are not checked here:

  • Your relationship must be genuine and subsisting, and your partner British, settled, or settling at the same time (SETF 7.1–7.3)
  • You must have held permission based on this relationship for at least a year (SETF 7.3)
  • The financial requirement, if you are on the 5-year Appendix FM route
  • English language (B1 now, B2 from Mar 2027) & Knowledge of Life in the UK (SETF 5.1 & 6.1)
  • Suitability requirements — no breaches of immigration laws or bail (SETF 2.1)
Qualifying period: 5 years on the Appendix FM partner route, or 10 years under Appendix Settlement Family Life. Absence limit: There is no strict 180-day limit for the spouse route. The UK must remain your permanent home. Time abroad is permitted for good reasons (e.g. work, study, holiday) provided family life was maintained in the UK throughout.
