Accessibility Statement

People use this site while they are anxious about their immigration status, often on a phone, often in a second language. Accessibility is not an extra here.

What is built in

• Text size — three sizes, changeable from the accessibility panel on any page. The choice is remembered on your device.
• High contrast mode — for anyone who finds the default palette hard to read.
• Dark and light themes, following your device setting unless you choose otherwise.
• Reduced motion is respected. If your device is set to reduce motion, nothing on this site animates.
• Keyboard navigation throughout, with a visible focus outline on every control.
• Meaning is never carried by colour alone. A gap in permission is hatched as well as coloured, and every status icon has a text label, so a result still reads correctly when printed in black and white or seen by someone with colour blindness.
• Screen reader labels on the timeline graphic and on every status icon, so the information in a picture is also available as text.
• Data tables scroll on their own rather than forcing the page sideways on a phone.

What we are aiming for

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. We are not claiming full conformance, because we have not yet had the site independently audited.

Known limitations

We would rather name these than let you discover them:

• Some older pages have not yet been brought onto the current colour system, and a few labels on them fall below the AA contrast ratio.
• The printed PDF report has not been tested with a screen reader.
• Some calculator forms are long, and we have not yet added skip links between their sections.

If any part of this site stops you doing something, please tell us on the contact page. Describe what you were trying to do and what happened — that is usually enough for us to reproduce it. We treat these as bugs, not requests.
