Editorial Methodology

How we research, write, and keep our UK immigration content current — and how we handle it when we get something wrong.

Not legal advice: VisaXplain is not a law firm and does not provide legal or immigration advice. This content is for general information purposes only and may not reflect the most recent immigration rules. Always verify with official UK government sources or a regulated immigration adviser.

General educational information only. VisaXplain publishes summaries and explanations of publicly available UK immigration rules. This content is for general informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or regulated immigration advice. Please see our full disclaimer.

1. Primary Sources

Every factual claim on VisaXplain is grounded in one or more of the following official sources:

  • Immigration Rules — the statutory instrument published at GOV.UK/guidance/immigration-rules.
  • Statements of Changes — amendments laid before Parliament and published via GOV.UK.
  • Caseworker Guidance — published internal Home Office instructions that describe how rules are applied in practice.
  • Official GOV.UK guidance pages — the public-facing summaries of eligibility, application processes, and fees.

Where we reference a specific rule or paragraph, we link directly to the source so you can verify the original wording yourself.

2. Fact and Commentary

We maintain a clear distinction between factual summaries of published rules and any editorial commentary or practical observations. Commentary is always clearly labelled — typically introduced with phrases such as "In practice…" or "Our view is…" — so that readers can distinguish the rule from our interpretation of it.

3. Update Cycle

Trigger Target Review Window
Statement of Changes laid before Parliament Within 72 hours of publication
Caseworker guidance update published Within 7 days of publication
Routine review (all pages) At least quarterly

Every page carries a "Last reviewed" date. If you see content that appears outdated, please let us know.

4. Calculator Methodology

Our calculators apply the published rules mechanically to the dates and parameters you enter. Each calculation identifies the specific paragraphs of the Immigration Rules it relies on, so the logic can be independently verified.

Calculator outputs are indicative only and reflect the rules as of the calculation date. They do not account for Home Office discretion, undisclosed facts, or rule changes that occur after the date of calculation.

5. Corrections Policy

If you identify a factual error, please tell us through the contact page. We take accuracy seriously and follow a clear process:

  • Errors of fact are corrected promptly and a correction notice is appended to the affected content.
  • Significant corrections are noted with the date and nature of the change.
  • We do not silently alter published content — transparency is a core editorial principle.

6. Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions are not influenced by commercial relationships, advertising partners, or subscription revenue. Content is written, reviewed, and published independently of any sponsorship or advertising placement.
