Visiting the UK

Most short trips to the UK — holidays, seeing family, business meetings, a conference — fall under the Standard Visitor route. Whether you need a visa in advance depends on your nationality; the rules about what you may do once you are here do not.

Those rules are stricter than people expect, and the most common problems come from assuming a business trip or a repeat visit carries rights it does not.

The core requirement

Whatever the purpose, you must satisfy the decision maker that you are a genuine visitor. In practice that means:

• You will leave at the end of your visit
• You can cover the cost of the trip and your return journey without working or claiming public funds
• You are coming for a permitted purpose
• You will not undertake prohibited activities
• You are not making the UK your main home through frequent or successive visits

The last point catches people who visit often and stay a long time each trip. There is no fixed number of days that triggers it — a caseworker looks at the overall pattern.

What you may and may not do

Permitted: tourism, visiting family and friends, attending meetings, interviews, conferences and negotiations, certain short courses, private medical treatment.

Not permitted: paid or unpaid work for a UK business, self-employment, filling a role a UK worker would otherwise do, claiming public funds, or marrying without a Marriage Visitor visa.

There is a narrow exception — the permitted paid engagement — covering a defined list including lecturing, examining and certain performances, arranged in advance and invited by a UK organisation.

Business visits

There is no separate business visitor visa. Business visiting is the Standard Visitor route used for the activities listed in the Rules, and the same prohibition on work applies.

The line is between attending business and doing the work. Meetings, conferences and negotiations are permitted. Delivering services to UK clients is not. See Business Visitor.

Visiting does not lead to settlement

Time spent in the UK as a visitor does not count towards any settlement route, including the ten-year long residence route. If your intention is to live here, the Visitor route is not a stepping stone towards it — you need a route that grants permission to stay.
